The Hawaii Fire Department mitigated a fire in a remote area near Puuwaawaa Ranch this afternoon and was on the scene of a second adjacent to the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai golf course at Kaupulehu.

West Hawaii Battalion Chief Reuben Chun said a fire department helicopter was dropping water over the Kaupulehu site. He said someone spotted the fire from Mamalahoa Highway and estimated it to be about one-quarter acre in size. Chun was just arriving at the scene at about 3 p.m. and said he would have a better sense of the fire’s size later today.

Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife personnel remained at the scene of the Puuwaawaa fire, Chun said. Based on the discovery of a split and burned tree at that remote location, Chun said firefighters did not believe the blaze was intentionally or even accidentally set by people, but possibly by lightning.

That fire had been mitigated, he said.
